  15. One of the popular ways that an author made money in the pre radio and TV age was to do lecture tours.  They would barnstorm through the country and almost no town was too small nor city that was too large for a lecturer to stop and give readings of his work. 
  16. It was very hard on a person to do this.  It could probably be said that it had a tendency to shorten their lives.  Dickens, Emerson and Twain all died shortly after concluding one of these lecture tours.
